A History of G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero. G. I. Joe was the codename for America’s daring, highly trained special missions force. Its purpose was to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. Hasbro Official website for all of your favorite Hasbro toys. From Transformers to Star Wars to The Avengers, you can find them all here! From 1. 98. 2 until 1. Hasbro’s G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero was one of the driving forces in kid’s entertainment, conquering the worlds of comic books, animated television, and tiny toy action figures. With so many facets to the fandom, we thought it was time to fill you in on the history of this influential media monster. THE ORIGINS OF A HEROG. I. Joe began life as a nearly 1. Mattel’s Barbie doll in popularity. Sales began to slip over time, so, in 1. Hasbro changed Joe from a soldier to an “action hero,” trading his tanks and jeeps for inflatable rafts and a patented “kung fu grip.” By the time the line was cancelled in 1. Joe had become something of a superhero, incorporating fantastic elements like the chrome- plated Bulletman and the bionic limbs of Atomic Man, who battled The Intruders, a group of cavemen from outer space. An Uphill Battle. By 1. 97. 9, Hasbro’s Head of Boy’s Toys, Bob Prupis, was ready to bring Joe back. Prupis’ secret plan for the G. I. Joe reboot, code named “Operation: Blast Off” on internal memos, was a Mission: Impossible- style toy line that had one foot in the future, with the other grounded in contemporary military technology. It would feature science fiction- inspired weapons like laser artillery and jet packs, next to realistic depictions of tanks, rocket launchers, and submachine guns. However, his idea was met with resistance from Hasbro executives. One of the first hurdles Prupis had to clear was the price of petroleum. Middle East oil suppliers had cut production, causing the cost of petroleum to jump from $1. The increased expense of this raw material for plastic would have to be passed on to the consumer, meaning the retail price of new 1. What do the members of G.I. Joe and Cobra do for fun? Joename origin As far back as World War II, "G.I. Joe" (for Government Issue Joe) was slang for an American rank-and-file soldier. There was even. Joe: A Real American Hero (also known as G.I. Joe or A Real American Hero) is a comic book that was published by Marvel Comics from 1982 to 1994. G. I. Joe figures and vehicles would be too high for the average household. So Prupis took inspiration from the “little green army men” he used to play with as a child, as well as from the popular Star Wars line of action figures produced by rival toy company, Kenner, and sized Joe down to 3 3/4- inches high to save on plastic. But even the smaller Joe concept was turned down by management, simply because it “wasn’t exciting enough.” For the next two years, Prupis kept going back to the drawing board to try to find some new hook that would make Hasbro bite, but he was rebuffed every time. 2000-2015, 2016 & 2017 G.I. Two- Week Notice. Then, in 1. 98. 1, after yet another failed attempt to get Blast Off off the ground, Prupis was told that he had one more shot with Joe, or else he needed to move on to other ideas. Prupis would be given two weeks with Griffin- Bacal, the marketing firm that managed Hasbro’s advertising, to see if he could come up with something to get kids excited about G. I. Prupis pulled together a team, including Kirk Bozigian from marketing and toy designers Ron Rudat and Greg Bernstein, to brainstorm product and promotional ideas. Although they came up with a lot of fun concepts, they faced a big marketing stumbling block—there was no G. I. Joe movie to tie into like Kenner had with Star Wars. Instead, it was suggested that a comic book might work just as well. Marvel- ous Assist. Just how Marvel Comics and Hasbro came together is a mix of legend, reality, and fuzzy memories from nearly 4. One version of the story states that the CEO of Hasbro and the president of Marvel met in the men’s room at a charity function, where the two got to talking shop. However, Hasbro’s. Bozigian says that it was Griffin- Bacal that contacted Marvel to discuss working on G. I. Whatever the case, Marvel was willing to help, and the relationship between the two companies was born. Marvel took a special interest in G. I. Joe, because Griffin- Bacal wanted to try something new for the comic book—television advertising. There were government regulations required for toy commercials, including: restrictions on runtime; the ad had to show kids playing with the actual toys; and animation was limited to only a few seconds. However, there were no such rules regarding advertising for comic books, because it had simply never been done before. Griffin- Bacal took the risky move of dedicating $3 million to create a series of 3. Marvel G. I. Joe comic book. Naturally, the comic featured all the action figures and vehicles from the toyline. Fury Force. After seeing the G. I. Joe concept, Marvel Editor- in- Chief Jim Shooter realized it was similar to something that writer/artist Larry Hama had been developing, called Fury Force. Fury Force was a series starring the son of Marvel’s spy extraordinaire Nick Fury as the leader of a seven- member paramilitary strike team. Hama had drawn character designs and basic biographies, but the series hadn’t been picked up by Marvel, so he set it aside. But instead of letting Hama’s hard work collect dust, Shooter suggested adapting his ideas to fit G. I. Joe instead. And just like that, Hama was in charge of the comic book series that would one day define his career. Enter Cobra. Because enemy toys had never sold well in the past, Hasbro hadn’t even considered a foil for G. I. But Hama insisted that “these guys can’t just march around and go on maneuvers or whatnot, they have to be battling some things, some threat..” It was Marvel writer Archie Goodwin that suggested a terrorist organization named Cobra. Inspired by the name, Ron Rudat developed the design for the enemy’s now- iconic logo. Birth of the File Cards. Hama kept a series of handwritten index cards to keep all of the characters and vehicles for the comic book straight. On each card he would write a few details, including biographical notes and military specialties. Hasbro had already considered including trading cards with the toys, but they liked Hama’s index cards so much they asked him to write more so they could be included on the back of the figure packaging for kids to cut out and collect. These “file cards” became a key aspect of the Joe toyline and nearly all of them were written by Hama. Blast Off Blasts Off. With exciting new figure and vehicles designs, interesting characters, and innovative advertising ideas, Bob Prupis approached Hasbro executives once again to reboot G. I. It’s been said that CEO Stephen Hassenfeld was so excited by the presentation, that when it was over he had tears in his eyes. The initial line of 3 3/4- inch G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero action figures debuted in the summer of 1. Nine Joes—Breaker, Flash, Grunt, Rock . An additional four Joes—Clutch, Grand Slam, Hawk, and Steeler—were included with some of the seven vehicles that made up the original toy line. Two Cobra figures—a Cobra soldier and a Cobra officer—were also released on carded packages. The first year sales projections for the new line of G. I. Joe toys was $1. The line wound up selling over $5. Christmas. Evolution of the Toys. After its phenomenal first year, Bozigian says the G. I. Joe line was given carte blanche to do whatever they wanted with the second series of toys. Vehicle designer Greg Bernstein ramped up the detail and the ambition on the second line of vehicles. Similarly, Ron Rudat, who designed every action figure from 1. But the biggest change for the line was in poseability. From the beginning, G. I. Joe figures featured more articulation than the competing Star Wars figures. Whereas Star Wars figures had five points of movement (arms, legs, and head), G. I. Joes had 1. 0 points: arms, legs, elbows, knees, torso, and head. However, in order to make the second wave of Joes even better, two swivel joints were added at the character’s bicep, allowing the arms to turn in towards the body to let the figures hold their rifles more realistically. This “Swivel- Arm Battle Grip” was clearly the future of the franchise, so the original figures were re- released, creating a definitive line between the original figures—now known as “straight- arm figures”—and the rest of the toys going forward. Flag Points. Because Cobra was more of an afterthought for Hasbro, they didn’t have the design for the Cobra Leader, better known as Cobra Commander, done in time for the line’s launch. So instead, they implemented another idea from that early brainstorming meeting: mail- away exclusives. Kids needed to collect proofs of purchase, known as “Flag Points,” found on every package, and send them, along with a check for 5. Cobra Commander figure. On the What’s On Joe Mind podcast, Bozigian said that Hasbro expected about 5. January 2 and March 3. The popularity of the mail- in offer spawned a new program for the company called Hasbro Direct, which gave kids the opportunity to buy overstocked, hard- to- find, and exclusive figures and vehicles. Foreign Duty. G. I. Joe might have been a real American hero, but he was popular all over the world, with figures and vehicles available in countries as diverse as Japan, India, Brazil, Canada, Italy, China, and many more. There wasn't a lot of continuity between the American and foreign lines, as many toys had different codenames, file cards, paint schemes, and could even be on a different side in the battle between G. I. Joe and Cobra. For example, in Britain, where the figures were called Action Force: International Heroes, Cobra’s black H. I. S. S. Tank, was the crimson red “Hyena,” and was driven by a repainted Destro known as “Red Jackal.” In Spain, the laser infantryman, Sci- Fi, was known as “Sargento L. It’s an inside joke with the Joe collector community that the file cards were written correctly, but then a mischievous cleaning lady at the Hasbro Iberia office would edit them overnight, so they would be a mess before they were sent to the printer the next morning. Some of the most sought- after foreign Joes were those manufactured in Argentina by toy company Plastirama. The Ballad of G. I. Joe from Cha- Ching Pictures, Olivia Wilde, Zach. Starring. Puella Magi Madoka Magica / Fanfic Recs. Proof that the remaining 1. Contract for here. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page. No- name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Self- Recommendations, in which you recommend a fanfic you wrote yourself, will also be zapped. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business. It is also the hardest. Kyoko is perfectly in- character here, and the whole story feels like something that could have easily occurred in canon. Definately a must- read for any fans of her. Homura had never once seen something like this. Or some'one' like this. She didn't know how to react, when she discovered that Madoka was not.. Madoka. The monster in her body was something she should hate. And yet, she couldn't bring herself to pull the trigger.. Humanizing a Witch is an interesting premise all on its own. This takes it a step further, and seems to be developing multiple plots in different directions as well. Highly recommended, even if it is still early in the story. The goal is to help her get through her life without getting her locked up in an mental institute. It is a funny as it sounds! One such girl is Sloan Redfearn, who wastes away in Fargo, North Dakota nursing a grudge and watching her hopes slowly die. But when Kyubey approaches with a unique opportunity, she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens to topple gods. The OCs are as fleshed out as the original cast, all having their own set of grudges, wounds, and skeletons in the closet. The interpersonal conflict, disturbing atmosphere, and inner turmoil give this fic the same feel as the original series, while the action is consistently fast- paced and gripping. Not much has happened at the moment yet, but the story seems to be focused on how the girls are now living in Homura's new world. What I like about this one compared to the others though, is that the author is really giving some time to expound on how the world is felt by the cast and presumably their adjustments, rather than instantly go to the part of changing it back. I also like how the author hasn't made a clear stance on whether Homura's world is good or bad. He continued, keeping his eyes on the duo of pink and purple, down in the city: . And now Madoka changed you back as the girl you were before. Now, there are two Homura Akemi. This story crosses the Despair Event Horizon so many times and in such a way that one just can't stop reading. Also it includes some of the Kazumi Magica cast and Oriko cameos as pawns on a cold war between Incubators. This author just outdid Urobuchi and in what way! But there's the little question of just who wished them back? Especially in Madoka's case. There also appears to be a Demon King of some kind hatching beneath the school.
Takes place after episode 1. Be warned, it is very dark. Inspired by Kyubey's history lesson in ep 1. Comments: Interesting, well- written historical fiction. Stories for Cleopatra, Cassandra, Eve, Sacagewea and Joan of Arc, along with several others, are up as of the writing of this rec, with more promised to follow. Working with Mami and protecting Madoka, Homura demands Kyuubey show her the past. However, Kyuubey seems to have a lot to hide. It is a very insightful and tragic take on the past of the most destructive witch in history, and ties everything in with the anime very well. Overall, it's an awesome, but sad fic that deserves to have a much larger audience. The same anonymous folks who have watched the show. Uncontrollable plot points from the show remain present, but the actual plot diverges drastically as a result of game breaking decision making and abilities courtesy of Anonymous. This is not without complications; meddling of the timeline has led to, among others, the appearance of Oriko, Kirika and Yuma, increasingly unforeseeable events, and the consciousness of the real Madoka needing to be jettisoned.. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie (Publish sheet music. Departures ~Anata ni Okuru Ai no Uta~ Arrangement from Guilty Crown ED1. Review: Jessica Chastain earns Oscar cred with 'Zookeeper's Wife' 3 days ago — 1 Comment. Anonymous takes control of her body. The series started out very lightheartedly (by lighthearted, we mean Anonymous- controlled Madoka being hilariously out of character on the first day) before drifting in and out of Serious Business territory. It doesn't hold back with the Mado. Homu shipping either. That's all it took. When Madoka's final wish changes everything, Homura's powers disappear, and apparently, the world is safe. However, the Witches still exist, and now, they're even more powerful than ever. Kyubey still lives, after all. Not only does this remove Homura's Time Travel powers (without diminishing her Badassery), it changes the whole setting. Now not only are witches and magical girls - now called Veneficus Puella- more powerful than before, now the Muggles are aware of the whole thing, making matters even more complicated for our heroines. Magica Musical by angel. Recommended by F1zzyp. Status: Dormant. Synopsis: Exactly as it says on the tin, it features lyrics to 4 different scenes in the show. A slight AU with an even darker and edgier take on the Madoka- verse with a noir flavor. The focus is on Homura, who is even crazier and darker than before, which can be said of almost all the characters (save for Mami). ESPECIALLY Madoka. Features a diverse cast from quite a few different series, including characters from The Idolmaster, A Certain Magical Index, and more. Early installments feature the GM's own illustrations, which add a nice flair to the mood. Among the dreary setting is some lighthearted humor, especially the MAXIMUM CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. The Aisleventure by Brickman Recommended by Canonier. Vanished from the internet. Please post a link if found. Some even manage to get happy endings. Here is a well written, very credible story explaining what happened between it and the second to last scene, and what happened afterward. What does a Goddess do after she ascends to heaven? A poignant look at Homura's experience and why hope is never a mistake. Sparse, elegant prose style. Manages to make for a happier conclusion to the series without violating any of the Urobuchi's premises or characterizations. Very solid grasp on Homura and distinguished on Mami and Madoka. Madoka spends more time with Mami than with anyone else. Sayaka is neglecting normal life in general and Hitomi is struggling with a dead- end relationship. Witches aren't exactly top priority anymore. Another timeline where Mami is not killed by Charlotte but taken out of commission, and Kyouko accepts a deal with Homura to teach Sayaka how to fight. Kyouko and Homura become better friends and pursue their respective love interests. All well and good, except that Charlotte defeating Mami involved breaking off a piece of her soul, driving her to depression and mental instability. This culminates in Mami deciding to kill Homura, largely out of jealousy, and more complications arise as the story progresses. An interesting premise and very well- written. Everyone's more- or- less in character and when they're not (Mami) it's justified by the events of the story. A number of good twists over the course of the story. It's very well- written and its prose is almost poetic. Perdendosi is a musical term meaning dying away. Madoka is understandably terrified and confused as the days drag on until Walpurgisnacht comes, and Homura's drastic change of tactics alters the timeline significantly. He offers her a new lease on life in exchange for her contracting as a magical girl. Charlotte loves her new, physically- fit body and feels like Sailor Moon, but not all is as it seems.. Like, possibly even worse than Sayaka's storyline in the original. So consider yourself warned. But it has great writing and character development, and will keep you on the edge of your seat, so it's strongly recommended if you can deal with the sadness. Also, it's quite impressive how the author manages to combine a bunch of the more popular Charlotte fanon theories into one really engrossing story. But as the miasma thickens and the demons multiply, the fragile peace of their lives threatens to shatter once more. They, the villain in particular, ruined the story for me and I had to stop reading, which is a shame because it was good until that point. A Magical Girl that claims to be Homura's twin sister and seems to be more powerful that what Kyubey is building Madoka up to be, seeing how she can take down witches with one shot. Who is this girl? How does she know about these events before they happen? What was even her wish? Homura is trying to save Madoka for the ninety- somethingth time, but aside from the usual issues, she's being followed around by this crazy girl named Niji Akemi, who claims to be her . Oh, and did I mention she speaks in weaboo? This is a very well- written Parody Sue fic and one of my favourite Madoka fics. The sentence structure is.. The author can't seem to settle on a tense, there's a lot of telling without much showing, and they make numerous grammatical errors besides. If you're bothered by poor grammar, then this story probably isn't for you. Now, with Kyoko's soul gem missing and Sayaka's humanity and personality only partially restored, they must band together to survive. I just need a few more minutes! Anime sheet music. How to Write Science Fiction. Science Fiction has come a long way from the days of Jules Verne. It's quickly become more complex and more popular than ever before. Fantasy Fiction Genre Definition . Fantasy is often characterized by a departure from the accepted rules by which individuals perceive the world around them; it represents that which is impossible (unexplained) and outside the parameters of our known, reality. Make- believe is what this genre is all about. Another description of a Fantasy Novel is any book that contains unrealistic settings, or magic, often set in a medieval universe, or possibly involving mythical beings or supernatural forms as a primary element of the plot, theme, or setting. Something magical is almost always part of fantasy and magic may be seen in the setting or in the plot. It may even be practiced by the characters. Fantasy usually describes those stories that could not happen in real life. Fairy tales by known authors, such as those by Hans Christian Andersen, are considered modern fantasy and have no problem relating to young children; in fact most adolescents grow up believing in fantasy. They wish on candles, wait for tooth fairies, talk to their stuffed animals and play with imaginary friends. History. Though the genre in its modern sense is less than two centuries old, its precedents have a long and distinguished history. Fantasy Fiction has a rich history of inspirations for critics to dissect and apply to the modern genre. It is often examined as the modern counterpart to mythology, but whether one of these practices inspired the other, and which inspired which, is hotly debated. With its roots in myth and legend, fantasy is the most elemental of all the genres. It is certainly interesting that many people for many generations believed in myth and legend in a way that dramatically affected their life and their culture. One thing is certain: there is something timeless about stories that pit motivating heroes who face long odds against dynamic villains. Eventually there is often a happy ending although important secondary characters may have been killed. Stories of the Odyssey, Arthur, and the like have influenced and shaped culture for centuries. Heroic fantasy yearns for a time of rigid class distinction, when good and evil were a part of breeding. When the strong ruled the weak and weak lived happily - providing rustic atmosphere in the way good peasants should. In fantasy, the reader may return to a simpler time - the world as we wish it might be. Sub Genres. Characteristics of fantasy fiction and its many overlapping sub- genres are the subjects of debate among some fans and writers. Fiction can and is often a multiple thing. A piece can belong to the fantasy genre as well as the detective genre, the romance genre etc. Science- Fiction and Fantasy are substantially different categories, however the line between them is often a thin one. Star Wars is a good example, since it is clearly within the science- fiction genre yet includes certain unexplained fantasy elements (particularly . Both types of genre are usually shelved together, both because of their readerships' tendencies to overlap and because of the authors' tendencies to blur the lines between these categories. Many science fiction authors have also written works of fantasy. Speculative fiction is a difficult genre to categorize neatly. For example, some authors might argue that most speculative fiction is pure fantasy - and yet a fantastical tale set in a far distant future would be more likely classified as 'science fiction'. In recent times, the term 'fantasy', when regarded as part of an individual genre, generally brings to mind tales of dragons and castles and knights in shining armor - but in truth, the genre as a whole encompasses so much more. Some examples of sub- genres are: Romance Fantasy. Fairy Tales. Alternative History. Arthurian Fantasy. Comic Fantasy. Dark Fantasy. Epic Fantasy. Fairy Tales and Mythology. Heroic Fantasy. High Fantasy. Mystery Fantasy. Magic Realism. Modern Fantasy. Sword and Sorcery. Cross Over's. Fantasy is the genre least likely to be affected by age. Many adults have enjoyed the Hobbit or the Harry Potter books. More recently the success of the film versions of the Lord of the Ring and the Harry Potter stories have dramatically increased interest in fantasy along with C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, and the film version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Fantasy continues to substantially outsell science fiction. Conclusion. Myth and legend has been an important part of culture since the beginning. Literature began with these stories. They explained the world that people lived in, provided lessons about behavior and consequences, and entertained as well. Fantasy opens the door to experiencing the magic that is in the world around us and more importantly the magic in ourselves. It can encompass a whirlwind of images and plot twists and is one of the few genres in which the same book can be read by an adult and a 1. The Best Portable Projectors of 2. Only a few years ago, the concept of having a projector small enough to take with you in your bag, let alone in your pocket, was just wishful thinking. But as projectors have come down in size, portable models have certainly come into their own, making it possible for you to project your data and video anywhere you go. Not only that, but portable projectors encompass a surprisingly wide range in size, brightness, and features. Here, we will help you sort out their differences, as well as highlight our 1. Projectors for Pocket or Palmtop. Pico or pocket projectors are little larger than smartphones. Because they can accommodate videos and photos for on- the- go entertainment, in addition to slides and charts for business or classroom presentations, these models can essentially be thought of as multimedia display systems. Though convenient and snazzy, they tend to be of low brightness and relatively expensive for their performance. So- called palmtop projectors are larger (and brighter) than pico projectors, typically a bit too large to comfortably fit in the palm of your hand, even with your fingers outstretched. Still, they are lightweight enough that you wouldn't think twice about packing one in a bag or backpack. Most are brighter, and have more connection options, than pico models. Most pico and palmtop projectors can run files from a USB thumb drive and/or SD card, so you don't need to lug your laptop with them. Some even have 1. GB or more of internal memory for storing media files. Many can project content from a smartphone or tablet, either wirelessly or via a Mobile High- Definition Link (MHL)- enabled HDMI port. Several models come with built- in rechargeable batteries so you can use them away from a power outlet. See How We Test Projectors. Larger, Brighter, but Still Portable. Many manufacturers have introduced LED- based mini projectors that are generally a bit larger than palmtops, but considerably brighter. They pack relatively high (WXGA, or 1,2. Although a few have internal rechargeable batteries, most run solely off of AC power. Thin- and- light projectors are as wide, deep, and bright as standard models but barely an inch thick, and weigh in at about 4 pounds. They are highly portable, but you pay a premium for their svelteness, and they usually have a limited set of connection choices. Finally, some standard projectors are still small and light enough to be easily portable, whether you're moving them between classrooms or taking them on a cross- country flight. Many come with soft carrying cases, but they could just as easily be slipped into a travel bag or backpack. The projectors we highlight here are relatively lightweight, with the heaviest weighing just over 3 pounds and the lightest less than 8 ounces. They vary considerably in size, brightness, features, and performance. Any one of these could be your favorite travel companion. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. In the cinema, every year brought forth a fresh wave of genre pictures, some brilliant in their awfulness (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Robot Monster), others simply brilliant. This article is devoted to the movies in the latter category. Here, then, is my rundown of my ten favourite science fiction movies of the 5. Destination Moon (1. The 5. 0s era equivalent of 2. A Space Odyssey, Destination Moon was the brave attempt of producer George Pal to bring a convincing account of a maiden voyage to the moon, 1. There are many aspects of Destination Moon that are now peculiarly quaint - the V2- like rocket, the stilted dialogue, and flag- waving jingoism - but the movie is notable for its concentration on scientific fact rather than bug- eyed monsters, and its attempt to imagine what a lunar mission might look like is, in places, surprisingly accurate. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1. I owe my enduring devotion to sci- fi to BBC2. In the 1. 98. 0s, the channel aired a series of 5. I remember rushing home from school one winter's evening to watch The Day The Earth Stood Still, and sitting wide- eyed before the television as the rail- thin figure of Michael Rennie emerged from his sleek flying saucer. I was absolutely spellbound. Rennie may have been a mere man in a silver suit, but his performance, as an extraterrestrial with a grave message to deliver, is utterly convincing. Along with Jeff Bridges in Starman and David Bowie in The Man Who Fell To Earth, Rennie makes for one of the screen's most engaging humanoid aliens, bringing an ethereal, detached grace to the role. Then there's Gort, the robot of few words, whose deadly eye can melt tanks, and who can only be pacified with the now immortal phrase, . And while this lack of cash becomes painfully obvious in the final reel, with the running time padded out with endless flashbacks and extensive use of stock footage, Invaders From Mars is nevertheless a chilling, effective sci- fi gem. It Came From Outer Space (1. As a youth, the ultimate revelation that It Came From Outer Space's aliens were, in fact, harmless travellers with engine trouble rather than merciless invaders came as a terrible disappointment. Viewed as an adult, the film's premise, the work of the incomparable Ray Bradbury, is an unusual one, particularly for sci- fi of the time. As was the case in The Day The Earth Stood Still, it's the ignorant humans who are the real menace. There's still a hint of Bradbury's gentle poetry in certain patches of Harry Essex's screenplay, while director Jack Arnold punctuates the film with some occasionally startling images. There's a great moment near the opening, where law enforcers open fire on a speeding pickup truck, and the view cuts to inside the cabin as it catches fire. Then there's the alien craft itself, an eerie polyhedron of light that convinces, despite the film's tiny budget. 10 More Underrated Sci-Fi Films You. 1o Underrated Sci-Fi Films You. Here are the tasty details of another ten movies science fiction fans should really. This week sees the release of . And while in all likelihood The War Of The Worlds (1. HG Wells' classic alien invasion novel got its first big screen adaptation in Byron Haskin's colourful, brisk updating, which shifts location from the UK's home counties to the sunnier climes of Southern California, while leaving its story of mass destruction largely intact. The tripods imagined by Wells now have invisible legs (too tricky for the effects team of the time to animate), but are slickly designed and as havoc inducing as ever, obliterating soldiers and entire towns with their deadly heat rays. The movie also dispenses with Wells' anti- imperialist subtext, replacing it instead with some ill- advised religious mumbo- jumbo about divine providence, an inclusion that would have, no doubt, infuriated its staunchly scientific author. Some cool creature designs and model effects more than compensate. Them! 1. 95. 4's Them! Its early scenes, where the ants are seen rather than heard, are filled with suspense, and Gwenn is great value as the scientist with all the best lines, including: . We've only had a close view of the beginning of what may be the end of us! Its special effects shots, which include a neat flight through an asteroid field and lingering, expansive views of a battered, stricken extraterrestrial world, are filled with style and colour, while Jeff Morrow makes for an engagingly pompous alien, and delivers his goofy dialogue with an admirably straight face. Forbidden Planet (1. No list of great 5. Forbidden Planet, one of the decade's most lavish and ambitious genre entries. A rescue team headed up by Commander John Adams (a young, dashing Leslie Nielsen) arrives on the planet Altair to discover a sinister Doctor (Walter Pidgeon), his nubile daughter (Anne Francis) and their robot butler are the only inhabitants on an otherwise deserted planet. It's not long, however, before Adams' crew is set upon by a huge, invisible monster of unexpected origin. Forbidden Planet's sumptuous cinematography and beautiful matte paintings, which suggest an expansive, alien subterranean world, are still impressive even today, and its id monster, animated by Disney's Joshua Meador, is a beast of palpable menace. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1. Unquestionably the greatest film to emerge from the 5. Almost imperceptibly at first, Carey begins to dwindle in stature. While Arnold explores the more sensational possibilities of this premise with relish (there are great fight sequences between Carey and a cat, then a spider), it's the psychological aspects of the protagonist's change that give the film its real punch. Carey's relationship with his wife decays along with his height, and he's forced to reconcile himself with his increasing vulnerability and, ultimately, his own mortality. Carey's closing monologue, as he gradually shrinks out of existence, is both poetic and moving, the film unforgettable. Honourable mentions: The Thing From Another World, Earth Vs The Flying Saucer, 2. Leagues Under The Sea, It! The Terror From Beyond Space. The 2. 5 Best Sci- Fi Films Of The 2. Century So Far. As kids, we looked ahead to the imminent 2. The robot butler and trips to the drug store in hovercars version hasn’t yet arrived, but the first 1. Sci- fi is almost as old as cinema itself —1. Georges M. Many so- called sci- fi blockbusters were really action movies with some fantastical trappings, rather than thoughtful, provocative examinations of the world we live in through speculation about worlds we might live in. That’s still true to an extent, but the last decade- and- a- half have seen a flourishing of smaller- scale, ingenious sci- fi pictures, as well as some dazzling bigger- scale examples with more ideas per se than explosions and laser fire. And with “Ex Machina” proving to be surprise hit this spring, the sci- fi idiom is the next in our Best Films Of The 2. Century So Far series (read Horror, Animated Films, and Music Documentaries). We set a few rules —no superhero movies (which is a genre unto itself these days), no films with sci- fi segments without the whole film being in the genre (see “Cloud Atlas” and “The Fountain”) and a few films that don’t quite feel like they are true science fiction. Otherwise, anything went, and the 2. Take a look below and let us know your favorites in the comments. The film was the best use of Cruise’s star persona in aeons (serving almost as a metaphor for the redemption of his own stardom), but the secret weapon, aside from a cunning evocation of video game tropes, the best alien warfare since “Starship Troopers,” and crystal clear direction from a back- on- form Liman, was Emily Blunt as the “full metal bitch,” making a strong case that she deserves to be the biggest star in the world. The film didn’t find the theatrical audience it deserved at home, but more and more people are catching on over time. Melding John Hughews David Lynch, and Albert Einstein into an ’8. Jake Gyllenhaal, in a star- making role) who receives visits from a sinister rabbit who may be trying to convince him to travel through time, it’s rich, funny, swooningly romantic stuff with a very fine cast (Patrick Swayze and Katharine Ross got well- deserved comeback roles, there’s a great cameo from producer Drew Barrymore, and keep an eye out for a young Seth Rogen as a bully), and a surprisingly melancholy tone. Kelly, just 2. 6 when the film was released, handles things with real flair (and a great ear for song selection), and while the Director’s Cut only makes the mythology more impenetrable, it’s a fascinating sci- fi puzzle- box on top of everything else. Lean, bloody, and with terrific action sequences (Quentin Tarantino called it his favorite film of the previous two decades), it’s also more than a mere genre piece: the students, and even their teacher (a smartly- cast Takeshi Kitano) are sensitively and three- dimensionally drawn, and its power as metaphor, both examining the power of violence and the demonization of youth, elevates it far above the tales of Katniss & co. Indeed, it cut a little too close to the bone for many, and landing in the aftermath of Columbine, it wasn’t released in the U. S. Some claimed the picture his worst (our review wasn’t very charitable), some thought it was a vision from the heavens, and as usual, when the dust has settled, more mannered judgments have taken root (more of a consensus Playlist opinion forms here). So yes, Nolan shoots for the fences in “Interstellar” and arguably does not connect in the same home run fashion he has for so many pictures in a row now. The dialogue can be really on the nose, while the ending some see as jumping the shark. None of us will make too strong of a case against any of those points. That said, Nolan’s film is still a dazzling, ambitious vision of love, time, space, and some deeper, perhaps fuzzier elements of the universe. It’s the place where the heart and quantum physics meet. While that might admittedly be a bit of an awkward intersection, its love- letter sincerity to humanity inspired by Nolan’s own children is at least visually awe- inspiring and occasionally breathtaking. Admittedly clunky in spots, it’s a film that will very likely only grow in estimation over time. But the film was a quiet, unexpectedly moving triumph, and was then exceeded on every front by Matt Reeves’ follow- up, one of the few sequels that trumps the original. Picking up after the ape- pocalypse, as Caesar (Andy Serkis) is forced to confront humanity again, as well as a new threat closer to home, the movie, even more than its predecessor, takes full advantage of the stunning performance- capture technology, which reaches something of an apex here. Beyond that, it’s also simply a remarkably well- told story: a rare summer blockbuster in which you actively root against violence taking place, with a borderline Shakespearean arc for its non- human hero, and Reeves’ stylish- but- unshowy filmmaking chops steering things beautifully. 13 http:// here are some good horror graphics and.
